There are many similarities between the role of a Coach and a Therapist or Counsellor. Both aims to help their clients identify what is holding them back and work with them to help them create a better life for themselves. However, there are some important differences which you should be aware of when you're considering working with either.
The below outlines the differences between the approaches.
Coaches often work with specific people in identifiable niche areas and focus on the themes and goals each individual client would like to reach. Some time is spent on unpicking the clients past but only if the client is open and willing to do this, and only with a clear focus on how this will help to create an action plan in order to reach the clients end goal.
Coaches are trained in tools and techniques to help a client see clearly where they are today, then find ways to move forward to an eventual goal or specific outcome within a predetermined time frame.
Counsellors help to unpick, identify and recognise the problem areas in a clients life and where and why these problems have arisen.
Counsellors are trained in creating a safe and supportive environment for a client to explore their feelings around specific problems and where these problems may have arisen. They help the client to gain the clarity and strength to cope with a certain situation or confront and solve specific problems holding them back.
Jenni Donato of Chance Coaching is a qualified Life and Family Coach and is trained in the relevant coaching skills to enable clients to uncover their ultimate goal and help the client to create their own plans in order to achieve this. She has also developed her own tried and tested techniques to help clients visualise their future potential and designed a process to lead to success.
Significant results can be achieved from the tools, techniques, and processes coaches use to take their clients on a journey of self-development. Clients are often surprised at how different their lives - and their outlook on life - can be after working with a coach.
Jenni is also trained in some basic counseling skills in order to bridge the grey area between the two approaches and is currently working towards a Professional Diploma in Therapeutic Counseling, awarded by ABC Awards and affiliated with The Affiliation of Ethical & Professional Therapists (AEPT).
